Political Science

The study of Political Science has special importance in all countries. Its study helps us to understand the mechanism and constitutional systems of modern government, the principles of government, the domestic and foreign policies of the nation, the legislature, executive and judiciary of different countries, etc. The principles of liberty, equality and fraternity are also made clear by the study of political science. Keeping in mind its importance and utilitarian value, Aristotle regarded Political Science as “the supreme science” or “the masters of all science”. Siliguri Mahila Mahavidyalaya started its journey in 1981 and since then teaching of Political Science as a General subject started. However, because of continuous demand from the students of the area, study of Political Science as Honours subject was introduced in the beginning of the nineties of the last century. Studying Political Science opens a number of career options for the students which includes – Law, Teaching, Research, Political Journalism, Administrative Services, Political advisors, International Relations etc. Many of our students are well-established in their respective field.

Geography

Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. They also examine how human culture interacts with the natural environment and the way that location and places can have an impact on people. Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and change over time. Economics is a social science which gives a general understanding of how the world works. This discipline gives a more practical and everyday application of the subject matter, and thus emphasizes on the personal development, decision making and interpersonal skills of a student. The 3 years degree course offered in Economics covers issues related to individual behaviour and causes and problems associated with joblessness, rise in prices, circulation of money, population growth ,educational attainment, healthcare, gender bias both at the national and global level. Students gain an understanding of how different economic issues affect them as consumers, workers, producers, investors, citizens and in other roles they assume over a lifetime. Above all, the subject contributes by helping students to develop their capacity for critical and analytical thinking.. Economics is all around us and it plays a key role in all aspects of life. Philosophy

“Philosophy” is the Mother of all social sciences and comes from Greek words meaning “love of wisdom.”  Philosophy uses the tools of logic and reason to analyze the ways in which humans experience the world.  It teaches critical thinking, close reading, clear writing, and logical analysis. It uses these to understand the language we use to describe the world, and our place within it. The tools taught by philosophy are of great use in further education, and in employment. Despite the seemingly abstract nature of the questions philosophers ask, the tools philosophy teaches tend to be highly sought-after by employers.  The most important reason to study philosophy is that it is of enormous and enduring interest.   In this department, students can learn how to ask the questions well, and how we might begin to develop responses.  The subject as a General combination was introduced at the initiation of the Institution. We are committed to a participatory style of teaching, in which students are provided with the tools and the opportunity to develop and express their own philosophical views.
