About The Department
Year of Establishment: Academic Session of Affiliation - Honours(2019-20), General(1985-86)
Economics is a social science which gives a general understanding of how the world works. The 3/4 years degree course offered in Economics covers issues related to individual behaviour and causes and problems associated with joblessness, rise in prices, circulation of money, finance, international trade, population growth, educational attainment, healthcare, gender bias both at the national and global level. Students gain an understanding of how different economic issues affect them as consumers, workers, producers, investors, citizens and in other roles they assume over a lifetime. This discipline gives a more practical and everyday application of the subject matter, and thus emphasizes on the personal development, decision making and interpersonal skills of a student. All of these taken together helps students to develop an insight to predict changes in policies and market conditions. Economics is highly interdisciplinary and is integrated with ideas from other disciplines like sociology, education, geography, political science etc. Above all, the subject contributes by helping students to develop their capacity for critical and analytical thinking. Economics is all around us and it plays a key role in all aspects of life. Thus, it is a subject worth knowing more about. Economics graduates have a wide range of career options including roles in finance, corporates, banks, insurance companies or may work as consultant, policy analyst, research analyst and even data scientist.
